  • Bird tests positive for West Nile in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Environmental Management and Health Services departments received confirmation Wednesday that a bird found in the South Lake Tahoe area of El Dorado County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first for 2010. The bird, a Western Scrub-Jay, was found on Aug. 24. A second positive bird, a Swainson's hawk, was also reported for El Dorado County Wednesday; however, it is believed that the bird was brought into El Dorado County from Mono County. So far this year, West Nile virus activity has been reported in 30 California counties, including neighboring Sacramento and Placer counties. There have been 34 human cases and 11 horse cases of West Nile virus reported in California in 2010."Confirmation of our first West Nile virus-positive birds means the virus is circulating between birds and mosquitoes and there is a heightened risk of infection in humans," said Virginia Huber, Tahoe Division Manager of the Environmental Management Department. Pics/AFPJames Jay Lee walked into the main entrance of the building at 1pm today waving a gun and wearing what appeared to be metallic canisters strapped to his front and back.Police have not yet confirmed if he is carrying a bomb. Three bomb technicians have been rushed to the scene. It is not clear how many people Lee is holding hostage at the building in Silver Springs, Maryland, a suburb of Washington DC. Police described it as a "small number".Most of the 1,900 people, who work in the building were able to escape safely. Children were also rushed to safety from the company's daycare facility, including four cribs full of babies. They were reunited with their frantic parents in a nearby McDonald's.Police said they are negotiating with Lee now and watching him on CCTV.It is not yet clear what he wants - but it is believed that he became enraged after Discovery rejected his ideas for a television show.In an online diatribe, he posted: "I have tried to submit television show ideas to the Discovery Channel about saving the planet and they have outright rejected all ideas and won't even listen.Adam Dolan, a sales director in Discovery's education division, said that he was heading to lunch with a co-worker when he heard about the gunman. He was told to go back up to the top floor, lock the door and turn off the lights.Eventually the workers were herded down a stairwell and told to go home."Everyone was very scared, but at the same time ... I think people were calm and collected and responded as one would expect in this situation," said Dolan 28.When he got to the bottom floor, he saw shattered glass near the company's daycare and suspected it was broken to get the children out.Dolan said the company has unarmed security guards, who won't let anyone into the building without a badge.Another person inside the building added that the gunman had something strapped to his chest and had hostages. The person asked not to be identified, saying people inside were told not to speak to the media. • Gearing up for the big 33

I swear to you I am not completely obsessed with my birthday, I mean, this is my second post about it in a weeks *cough*it sSeptember5th*cough* but this year I have a new reason to be obsessed about it. I m not going to be home. I m going to be away from Bobby, who always fusses over me and makes my birthday special. Instead, I am going to be with EMILY, who makes fun of me and puts me in my place. So you can imagine my apprehension. We are going to spend labor day weekend with our kids and no husbands don t rob our houses, our husbands will be there! at my parent s place in Virginia, for funzies, because Em s never been. And there on top of the mountain, with only dial-up internet, miles away from distractions, I am going to carry out the threat I made MONTHS ago and force Emily to watch my favorite movies, Anchorman and Hot Rod with me! And since we ll be at my parents she s not even going to get to drink any alcohol to lift her spirits. Though we WILL have Mountain Dew! Nope, she s just gonna have to have some good, clean FUN with me. Well, if you can call those movies clean. Some good, PG-13 fun! And she s offered to bake me a chocolate cake! And since neither of us have a car big enough for both our families to fit in, Chevy is loaning us a sweeeeeeeeeeeet Traverse to drive on the trip! Which is awesome because last month when we were in Virginia you may recall we had to COAST our broken-down car down the mountain! So who knows, we might get crazy on chocolate cake, Mountain Dew, Will Ferrell, and Andy Samberg, and go joy-riding down the mountain! All I gotta say Berry, is, no pressure, but that cake better be good! Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the big 33. And be glad it s not YOURS, Forever 31.

  • Introducing: Corporate-Sponsored State Parks

photo: Thinkstock Is it worth stickingcorporate logos on signs around state parks in order to keep them open Several parks in New Hampshire, Maine, Georgia, and Virginia are low on funds and looking into corporate sponsorships to continue to be able to maintain their public land. People visit state parks to feel closer to nature and to drink beer in campsites, not to be bombarded with corporate sponsorship ads. But then again, funding from the big guys could be the lesser of two evils here. So, is it better to have a state park brought to you by Pepsi, Comcast, or Sony than no park at all Sound off. via The Huffington Post Post from: BlissTree Introducing: Corporate-Sponsored State Parks
